Curator's statement
- by Pantea Lachin
This exhibition concentrates on the physical, psychological and emotional possibilities in/on font itself. The main focus was generally on an experimental-creative way to find solutions and less technological.
The decision was made consciously to not use the most usual medium for font: The print medium as a passive two-dimensional surface. With this and the focus on type (as a visual language of letterforms) we had a defined work frame for our ideas and concepts - on the other hand we did not want to limit ourselves too much and decided to let any other medium to be possible, like installation, performance, photography, sound and visual interaction and video.
The main aim was to take the font passivity away and shown it with more active and emotional. Therefor time and three dimensionality had often a main role. The additional elements of time and 3D provide opportunities that enrich the current advances made in expressive font.
The experiment's results should capture the viewer's attention and invite/animate him/her also to interact. The important issues were to let enough space for interpretation and improvisation. The observer can reconstruct his/her existing experience with font.
Like the form of the media itself, the ways that we read and experience type are changing.
